Watercress Park is a reminder of the Wandle Valley’s agricultural past. It’s a small area of grassland bordering the river.
Watercress grew naturally in the River Wandle for centuries and became an important industry, going into decline largely because of pollution in the late 19th and early 20th centuries – including a typhoid outbreak in Croydon in the 1930s.
