Bunce’s Meadow is a riverside area which was once used for bleaching cloth.
The process started in Merton in the late 16th century, when Dutch bleachers began to settle along the banks of the Wandle, laying out the material to be whitened in the sun. Prior to that, English linen was sent to Holland every spring to be bleached through the summer months, then sent back in autumn.
Deen City Farm is an educational resource, located next to Bunce’s Meadow.
