TREASURE DESCRIPTION: Morden Hall was once the manor house of Morden and was built by Richard Garth in 1775 on land which had up to the Dissolution been owned by Westminster Abbey. Grade II Listing Number: 205114
Morden Hall has had a number of uses apart from being a manor house. Following the Garth’s Lords of the Manor 1554- 1872, leaving the House c.1778 it was leased out to several wealthy gentlemen until it became a boarding school for young gentlemen in 1828 known as Morden Hall Academy. It remained a school until 1867 when it was bought by Gilliat Hatfeild and there were significant developments to the house, and especially the estate. During WWI, the Hall became a military hospital and later an annex of the London Hospital until 1941 when The National Trust took it over. It was being run as a hospital for women and children funded by Gilliat Edward Hatfeild. Subsequently, it has been a local authority education centre, a pub and restaurant. Presently, it is empty.
These treasures were made as part of The Building Exploratory, Wandle Treasures project. This project was part of the wider Living Wandle Landscape Partnership Scheme, funded by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.
