Merton Mill Connollys

TREASURE DESCRIPTION: The residential building at the end of Wandle Bank is next to Wandle Park which can be entered via a footbridge. On a wall inside the Park is a blue plaque for the site of Wandle Bank House where the corn mill owner lived. There is also a monument in the Park to Harry Pollard Ashby, the first advocate of open spaces.

Connolly Leather ceased trading in 2002 after more than 125 years of supplying quality finished leather to customers such as the British Royal Family, Rolls Royce & Bentley, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Jaguar & Lotus. Many contracts used their leather over the years such as the House of Commons, the House of Lords, The British Museum and the QE2. They also supplied renovation kits and hide food. ‘Connollising’ is the name for restoring the initial appearance of leather.

These treasures were made as part of The Building Exploratory, Wandle Treasures project. This project was part of the wider Living Wandle Landscape Partnership Scheme, funded by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.
