Cricket Green, home to Mitcham Cricket Club, is one of the country’s oldest cricket greens, where cricket has been played since 1685, it is reported, as is the story that Admiral Lord Nelson used to watch the local team in action.
On the green is the Ruff Memorial stone, commemorating Tom Ruff, cricketer and mayor of Mitcham in the early 60s.
Mary Tate’s Almshouses overlook the green, built in 1829 to accommodate 12 poor widows or spinsters.
Another small green, Police Green is part of Cricket Green.
