TREASURE DESCRIPTION : Earthenware dish with light lustre decoration, made by William De Morgan in1888. The dish depicts a stylized fawn in russet on a pale olive background with a light lustre glaze and single tree decoration.
William De Morgan was an English potter and tile designer, and a leading ceramic artist in the Arts & Crafts Movement.
He trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London and his impressive range of work included tiles, panels, plates, chargers and vases with a variety of decoration involving Arts & Crafts themes taken from nature (plants, flowers and animal motifs) as well as nautical designs like a Viking sailing ship and Spanish ‘moorish’ ships.
He was involved in the entire process of production especially design and decoration, and clearly believed in displaying beauty in everyday objects.
These treasures were made as part of The Building Exploratory, Wandle Treasures project.
This project was part of the wider Living Wandle Landscape Partnership Scheme, funded by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.
