The Mill House Ecology Centre is an educational facility created to allow school children to carry out environmental studies on Mitcham Common. It’s located near the remains of an old windmill.
Mitcham Common has a huge variety of wildlife habitats with different soil-types, from grassland, scrub and heathland through to woodland. There are also a number of ponds, some of which are the result of gravel extraction during the 19th century, Seven Islands Pond being the largest. Bidder’s Pond was created as recently as 1990, named after George Parker Bidder, who helped to save Mitcham Common for future generations, leading a campaign in the late 19th century.
For an adult audience, the centre is also used for lectures and to put on exhibitions about Mitcham Common, ecology and wildlife conservation topics.
