Lambeth Cemetery was established in 1854, in response to the Metropolitan Burial Act of 1852, which arose as a public health measure to combat outbreaks of cholera. It’s situated next to the modern Crematorium and Garden of Remembrance, opened in 1969.

There are two Gothic-style lodges and a memorial chapel designed by F.K.Wehnert and J.Ashdown. The layout is grid-like with a few trees and grassed areas.

It has a particular association with Victorian music hall artists – Dan Leno and Stanley Lupino are both buried here.

The cemetery is also the site of many Commonwealth war graves from both world wars and a screen wall memorial, unveiled in 1953, to commemorate personnel whose graves are unmarked by CWGC headstones.

It provides a natural habitat for green woodpeckers and sparrowhawks.
