Bed Zed is the shortened name of Beddington Zero Energy Development. This is an environmentally-friendly housing development in Hackbridge, designed to be carbon neutral and sustainable — the first large scale community with this achievement.

Designed by the architect, Bill Dunster, it was built in 2000 – 2002, providing 82 affordable homes and large areas of work and office space. Each dwelling has a sky garden or terrace. There is greenery everywhere and few cars, with cycling, walking and public transport being encouraged.

Efficient use of energy provided from renewable sources, water-efficient processes, low-impact materials, waste recycling, eco-friendly transport — it seems that everything has been considered to best protect the environment. Add to that the high quality of the accommodation, a strong sense of community spirit and an attractive look and feel and it’s definitely a place to visit for inspiration.
